Enjoying old age

As populations continue to age across the globe, people are seeking ways to reduce the burden of getting older and identifying opportunities to maintain good health.

Nutrition and lifestyle are the key factors in healthy ageing. By maintaining positive health and making lifestyle choices that prevent chronic illness, older people can maintain independence, recover from illness and reduce their risk of disease.

The role of nutrition

A person’s likelihood of ageing well can be greatly enhanced by ensuring their diet contains beneficial nutrients including protein, calcium and vitamin D. Fibre, although not a nutrient, is also important as it improves digestive health. Unfavourable dietary components, including saturated and trans fats, should be minimised.

At Kerry, we understand the complexity of creating nutritional solutions for the healthy ageing consumer. We work closely with our customers to deliver great tasting nutrition that appeals to today’s ageing consumer. We have a range of targeted nutrition solutions that address everything from weight management to immune health.

The freedom of digestive comfort

Almost everyone experiences digestive issues from time to time – whether it’s an upset stomach, gas, heartburn, constipation or diarrhoea – gastrointestinal woes are often uncomfortable and can be embarrassing.

Common tips to keep your digestive system healthy include regular physical exercise, drinking plenty of water, reducing stress, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet.
There is increasing demand among consumers for food and beverage products that offer positive nutrition and tangible health benefits.

People with poor digestive tolerance, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and allergy issues require specific solutions to ease digestive discomfort. Considerations include the amount and type of fibre (soluble and insoluble) and type of protein in the diet.

Prebiotics and probiotics give friendly bacteria an advantage in the competitive environment of the intestinal tract. They can help establish and maintain a healthy gut microflora, which in turn is beneficial for healthy digestion and stimulation of the immune system.

Kerry has been researching and developing digestive health solutions for more than 30 years – including soluble fibre solutions, plant proteins, hydrolysed proteins and prebiotics. We help our customers to create food and beverage products so their consumers can enjoy the comfort and freedom of a well-functioning digestive system.

Reinforcing bone health

Bone mass increases throughout growth until it peaks at the age of 20. From around 40 onwards,

bone loss exceeds bone formation and bone mass decreases. Excess bone loss leads to osteoporosis – a condition characterised by bone fragility and an increased risk of fracture. Around 200million people worldwide are believed to suffer from osteoporosis.

An optimal diet for maintaining bone health includes adequate amounts of protein and calories as well as recommended intakes of calcium and vitamin D – essential in helping to maintain proper bone formation and density. Other micronutrients, which have been shown to play a role in bone health include vitamin K and A, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.

Kerry provides a comprehensive range of solutions to support bone health and maintenance across multiple applications and formats, which can be customised to your specific needs.

Giving immunity a boost

A healthy immune system creates a defence against disease-causing microorganisms.

However, as it is a system and not an entity, it requires balance and harmony to function well.

Adequate protein status is essential to support immune health and may aid in the reduction of infection risk. Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals also help to boost natural defences and protect cells.

Good digestion protects the immune system

The digestive tract helps us to digest food, absorb nutrients, assist in toxin clearance and shields us from invading bacteria and viruses. More than 70% of the bodys immune system resides in the digestive tract. Food intolerances and food allergies frequently disrupt digestive balance and can negatively impact the immune system.

Central to Kerry’s immune health offering is Wellmune®, a 100% natural food, beverage and supplement ingredient clinically proven to help strengthen the immune system, supported by numerous published, peer reviewed clinical studies.

We have been researching and developing nutritional solutions for more than 30 years to help you create food and beverage products that maintain healthy digestive and immune systems.

Fighting illness with nutrition

Malnutrition associated with disease is a widespread problem, particularly in healthcare settings, such as hospitals or care homes.

Older people are particularly at risk of malnutrition – hospitalised patients over the age of 65 years have a 30% greater chance of becoming malnourished. This is particularly problematic among patients with cancer, affecting up to 85% of patients with certain cancers.

Malnutrition can occur for a number of reasons, but is primarily caused by insufficient dietary intake. This can occur for a variety of reasons such as poor appetite, swallowing problems and the side effect of drugs.

Treatment of malnutrition is multifactorial. Supplemental nutrition, in the form of oral nutritional supplements and tube nutrition play a key role in the treatment and management of malnutrition.

Creating products for critical care is a complex process and involves a dedicated team of experts, from nutrition scientists to application and technology specialists to regulatory. At Kerry, we understand this complexity and we have the knowledge and expertise to help you deliver great tasting products that meet the nutritional needs of this consumer.

Growing older, stronger

Human muscle undergoes constant changes. Muscle strength declines by 1.5% per year between age 50 and 60 and by 3% thereafter.

Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass, muscle quality and physical strength and function. It is estimated that up to 13% of elderly people aged 60-70 years are affected by sarcopenia.

Protein is vital

Adequate protein intake is essential to support muscle building, maintenance and slow muscle loss. Existing evidence suggests that 1-1.5g / kg body weight of high quality protein, spread throughout the day, is necessary to maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
Vitamin D intake is also associated with improved muscle health and an association exists between low vitamin D levels and sarcopenia.

Kerry’s dedicated nutritional experts understand the complex nutritional requirements for the maintenance of muscle health. We have a comprehensive range of solutions across multiple applications and formats, which can be customised to your specific needs.

Weight and health bound together

It is estimated that by 2035, 592 million people will have diabetes, of which over 250 million can be attributed to obesity. Heart disease remains the number one cause of death globally.

Nutrition is an essential element in the prevention and management of diabetes and heart disease.

Specific considerations include portion and calorie control to support energy balance, protein and fibre intake for appetite regulation and satiety purposes and appropriate amounts of healthy fats such as long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Intake of saturated and trans fats should be limited and high sugar diets should be avoided in the prevention and management of diabetes.

Kerry has wide raging expertise in researching and developing nutrition solutions to help consumers achieve their weight management goals and reduce their risk of diabetes and heart disease. Our nutrition scientists work closely with our applications and technology experts to formulate innovative, scientifically supported, nutritious products that taste great, across a wide range of applications.
